Moving Tips

Moving Tips and Hints

Nobody likes the process of moving. At Horizon Realty, we are not only the experts in Gainesville/Lake City area real estate but also the authorities in the moving process. We enjoy helping you make it as stress-free as possible. Do you wish moving was simple? Take a look at our seven helpful moving tips and hints.

  • Recycle. It may sound like a no-brainer, but we often don’t consider using recycled materials to pack our belongings. Previously shipped boxes, bubble wrap, and old newspapers can be collected long before the moving date and will save valuable time and money.
  • Start early. Packing and unpacking items is undoubtedly one of the worst things about moving to a new home. However, it’s a great chance to sort through unneeded or unwanted items. Sorting belongings early allows time to sell, donate, or throw away non-essential items.
  • Plan for pets and children. Our children and pets are valuable members of the family. In order to make moving day less stressful and reduce the risk of injury, make plans to keep kids and pets occupied. If moving far away from your previous home, consider sending the children and pets on a vacation with family members while you’re getting settled.
  • Notify others. Before sending letters and postcards, make a list of all the people and companies that will need to know you are moving. Remember to include doctors, pharmacies, schools, utility services, credit card companies, and banks. To make it simple, create a form letter with your information. Adding a few details to a form letter is much quicker than individually sending out notifications.
  • Medication refills. Don’t wait until the last minute to refill medication. When moving, it can take a while to find new doctors and pharmacies, much less get an appointment. Talk to your current pharmacy and physician to discuss the possibility of filling medication three months at a time to ensure a sufficient supply during your transition.
  • Color coordinate. When packing and planning to move, color coordinating your boxes can make the unloading and unpacking process simple. Using stickers or markers, assign a color to each room of your new home and add that color to each box to easily identify their destination.
  • Set aside essential items. Have you ever needed an item after everything is all packed and ready to go? Sorting through boxes is frustrating and a great way to waste time while you’re on a tight schedule. Create a box or two with essential items like toiletries, a change of clothes, medication, and snacks.
